Professor Hang Chang Chieh (CC)
Institute for Engineering Leadership
In his professional life, Prof CC Hang has worn, and continues to wear, many hats – academic, policy-maker, entrepreneur, corporate mentor. Driving all these is a passion to continually learn, relearn and create value from his experiences through others or directly.
Following a stint in Shell, he entered the NUS Faculty of Engineering as an academic and was subsequently appointed to three senior roles—Vice-Dean of the faculty of engineering in 1985, head of the department of electrical engineering in 1990, and deputy vice-chancellor (research and enterprise) in 1994—during which time he had to oversee the university’s transformation from a primarily teaching institution to one that is research intensive. In parallel, he became the founding deputy chairman of the National Science and Technology Board (NSTB) in 1991, a part-time position he held until 1999. For his contributions to championing research in NUS and NSTB, Singapore awarded Professor Hang the Public Administration Medal (Gold) in 1998, and the National Science and Technology Medal in 2000.
During 2001 to 2003, Prof Hang was seconded to NSTB as its Executive Deputy Chairman to consolidate all the non-bio research institutes under the Science and Engineering Research Council, renaming NSTB as the Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR) in the process. He also pioneered the establishment of the Grow Enterprise with Technology Upgrade Programme (GET-UP) to transfer know-how and manpower from A*STAR research institutions to local small-and-medium enterprises.
Now back at NUS as the Executive Director of the Institute for Engineering Leadership, after first heading the NUS’s division of engineering and technology management from 2007- 2016, Prof Hang continues to challenge himself, and others, to stretch their boundaries with an eye not on chasing wealth but to work towards creating value for others.
